Green Terminals for Next Generation Wireless Systems  

GREEN-T, a Celtic flagship project, ( targeting green communications, proposes Green Terminals for Next Generation Wireless Systems in order to reduce energy per bit. GREEN-T investigates and demonstrates energy saving technologies for multi-standard wireless mobile devices by exploiting the combination of cognitive radio and cooperative strategies while still maintaining the essential performance in terms of data rate and QoS to support active applications. These strategies assist GREEN-T to overcome the so called “back to the future” (fixed line communications) scenario and to avoid falling victim to the energy trap of 4G mobile systems. GREEN-T provides a solid foundation towards economic and environmental sustainability for the future network with the assistance of joint application of cooperative and cognitive strategies towards new paradigms in network design and deployment for energy saving. This perception is further extended by investigating lightweight security approaches, which are a critical requirement when the wireless link goes beyond the trusted circle of users and involves a foreign proxy device that requires new ways of managing confidentiality, integrity and authentication.
This workshop, inspired by the GREEN-T research initiative, envisions contributions including different aspects on green communications ranging from radio protocols to energy efficient networking topologies, and lightweight security. This workshop will bring together academic and industrial researchers to identify and discuss technical challenges and recent results related to cognitive radios and cooperative strategies for energy savings on the mobile terminal side, as well as on the network side. Specific topics include, but are not limited to:

• Cognitive radios and networks towards high energy-efficiency
• Energy-efficient cooperative networks and communication
• Energy efficient communication networks
• Context awareness and signalling for energy saving strategies
• Short range energy efficient communication
• Cooperative relaying for energy saving
• Energy efficient reconfigurable radios and software defined radios
• Energy-efficient cooperation in homogeneous and heterogeneous networks
• Experimental testbeds and results for energy efficient communication techniques
• Standardization and regulatory aspects and activities for energy efficient
• Advanced energy saving strategies in different technologies, including Bluetooth,
   DVB-H, UWB, Wi-Fi, WiMAX, and LTE
• New Business models and Novel Applications for Energy saving
• Lightweight security
