Face to face with the giants—a harbour with a difference

Harbour tour—those words automatically conjure up a vision of launches gently moving across the Elbe. That there are some highly unusual sights to be seen on the land side of Hamburg harbour is something we show our tour guests every weekend on the
three-hour tour, 'Face to face with the giants'.
The coach sets off from Überseebrücke on a journey through time that takes us back over 800 years of the port’s history. The days of conventional cargo handling come to life once more: Nikolaifleet, Speicherstadt (the historic warehouse district) and the 1950s warehouses of "Stiftung Hamburg Maritim" as you drive past old Kampnagel cranes, you can almost catch the smell of crates, sacks and drums.
A view over the vast expanse of Hamburg harbour from almost 60 metres up, from the Köhlbrand Bridge, comes next—and suddenly we find ourselves back in the present. The modern, high-tech docklands offer us a fascinating glimpse behind the scenes. In
possession of a special permit, the coach rolls right up to the terminals. Thanks to the knowledgeable explanations of the tour guides, the bewildering confusion of van carriers and reach stackers on Burchardkai crystallises into a smooth-running machine of filigree precision, and the interplay between automatic transport platforms moving as if by magic and fully automatic portal cranes in Altenwerder, the most up-to-the-minute container terminal in the world today, becomes one great big logical, logistical whole.
Now you can find the answer to all those questions that ever popped into your head at the sight of the big ships and towering gantry cranes as you strolled along the banks of the Elbe. Only trade visitors otherwise ever get such a close-up experience of the harbour.
